Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
