Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
