Trumpism's most revealing and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most foolish, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the American president commenced revealing everyone his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have dared – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the fastest-growing cadre among Americans might have little sense regarding him since they are skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; conversely, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape covert authorities. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you must offer him your sweater also.
The evident and direct fact that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of radical love centered on the impoverished has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired electorate to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the best parts in US history.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the worst regarding America and Christianity was nonexistent; it signifies both humility and conviction, a combination that committed American Christians should be comfortable with.
